Exploring Penguins 🐧 P1 Miss Cunningham’s class

23rd Jan 2026

The boys and girls in Miss Cunningham’s class have been having lots of fun learning about penguins as part of our World Around Us topic. The children were very curious and asked fantastic questions as we discovered where penguins live and how they survive in some of the coldest places on Earth.

We learned that penguins are birds but cannot fly. Instead, they use their flippers to swim through the water, where they are excellent hunters. The children were fascinated to find out that penguins have a special layer of fat and waterproof feathers to help keep them warm. Many penguins live in Antarctica, although some can also be found in warmer climates. We also discovered that penguins love to eat fish, squid and krill and that they waddle on land but glide gracefully in the sea.

The children enjoyed sharing what they had learned through art activities, discussions and storytelling.
