Maths in Action: Giant Measurements (YW)
15th May 2026
The P.3 children had great fun working together during a practical numeracy activity on non-standard measurement. The class worked collaboratively to draw around a child to create a giant figure before exploring ways to measure the area using cubes, lollipop sticks and paper squares. The children first estimated how many objects would be needed to cover each area and then carefully measured to check their predictions. Halfway through the activity, they paused to re-estimate and discuss how their thinking had changed. There was extensive discussion throughout as the children shared ideas, compared strategies and supported one another in solving problems. This hands-on lesson encouraged teamwork, communication and mathematical thinking in an engaging and meaningful way. It was wonderful to see such enthusiasm, cooperation and confidence as the children explored measurement through play and investigation together.
